What is a Publicist?
A publicist is a person whose job is to generate and manage publicity for a company, a brand, or public figure – especially a celebrity – or for a work such as a book, film, or album. … Publicists brand their clients by getting magazine, TV, newspaper, and website coverage.
Nowadays, since so many businesspeople are on the go with their own cell phones, they do not have time to do all the typing for managing their own websites and so they began doing the smart thing and hiring their own publicist.
In the old days, it became a thing to have your own publicist especially in Hollywood!
Now, book first time authors even hire a ghost writer, editor, literary agent team which also includes an author’s publicist.
Theresa J Morris as a singer/songwriter and member of BMI first had her own publicist when she became a celebrity psychic in 1990. She joined county music association and paid her dues back then which annual dues in Nashville were $100 just to be a card-carrying member.
Now, since TJ retired from the singing songwriter making music business, she went into making websites for her musician friends which lead to her author friends, which lead to her entrepreneur friends.
Then, social media came along and when Facebook became a big hit along with Twitter, and other social media free places to post your own photos and stories, people kept telling her they didn’t need a website. They would just use Facebook.
Now she is seeing people go full circle again and her friends who are entrepreneurs do not want the hassle of updating their own websites or doing the back-end work so, they hire her!
